Last week we explored “Am I Nonbinary?” — and before that, “Transgender: One of the LGBT+ Spectrum.” As part of my in-depth exploration of LGBTQIA+ identities, I aim to continue sharing what I learn, making these topics more visible, relatable, and comprehensible. Today, we’re diving into another beautiful identity — genderfluid.

What Is Genderfluid?
Genderfluid is a gender identity that describes someone whose gender is not fixed. A genderfluid person may feel more masculine on some days and more feminine on others or somewhere in between and sometimes completely outside the traditional gender binary.

In simple terms:
Genderfluid = fluid gender experience that can shift over time or depending on context, emotions, or energy.
It’s not the same as being confused or undecided — it’s an intentional and valid identity that acknowledges gender as something dynamic, rather than static.
Living as Genderfluid: What Does It Feel Like?
For many genderfluid people, gender is a moving experience. Some describe it as tides, rising and falling, never staying in one place too long. Others feel like they are blending or switching between different gender expressions, depending on their mood or environment.
You might:
- Feel like “he/him” some days, “she/her” others, and “they/them” often.
- Change your style, voice, or mannerisms depending on how your gender flows.
- Find freedom in not being pinned down to one identity or expression.
And that’s the beauty of it — it’s yours to feel, explore, and express however it comes naturally.
The Genderfluid Symbol
The genderfluid symbol combines aspects of traditional gender symbols into one unified design that reflects movement, variation, and freedom from gender norms.

You’ll often see variations, but common themes include:
- Circles, arrows, and crosses combined
- Aesthetic curves and fluid shapes to represent change
- A blending of masculinity, femininity, and everything beyond or between
Just like the identity itself, the symbol is not rigid — it evolves, gets reinterpreted, and allows space for individuality.
The Genderfluid Flag: What Do the Colors Mean?
The genderfluid flag was designed by JJ Poole in 2012, and it beautifully reflects the experience of gender fluidity. It includes five horizontal stripes:
🩷 Pink – femininity
🤍 White – lack of gender or a combination of all genders
💜 Purple – a mix of masculinity and femininity
🖤 Black – all genders, including identities outside the binary
💙 Blue – masculinity
Each stripe represents part of the fluid gender experience, offering visibility and pride for those who live in motion, not in boxes.

Why It Matters
For genderfluid people, visibility means validation.
Being seen, recognized, and respected, especially in a world that often tries to define people with rigid labels is powerful!
Whether you’re questioning, discovering, or already confidently genderfluid, know this:
You don’t owe anyone consistency. You owe yourself authenticity.
If you’ve ever felt like your gender changes subtly or boldly, from day to day, you’re not broken.
You’re not alone. You may be genderfluid, and that’s something to celebrate!!
